Details of the activity

Modern art collections In the 1950s, the modern art collection was essentially made up of donations collected by Pierre Brune and Frank Burty Haviland from artists who had stayed in Céret. There is also the bequest, according to her husband's wishes, from Madame Aribaud. Archivist of the city, Michel Aribaud frequented artists passing through Céret and built up a personal collection of works by Juan Gris, Auguste Herbin, Kisling, André Masson, Manolo Hugué… Between 1950 and 1957 Picasso and Matisse donated pieces exceptional including a unique series of 28 ceramic cups on the theme of bullfighting for Picasso and 14 drawings made during his stay in the port of Collioure in 1905 for Matisse. Over time, the historical collection tells of the passage of the most important artists of the 20th century in Céret through the works of Picasso, Matisse, Auguste Herbin, Chaïm Soutine, Pierre Brune, Masson, Manolo, Pinkus, Krémègne, Juan, Gris, Marc Chagall, Raoul Dufy, Edouard Pignon, Léopold Survage… It also illustrates the dialogue that is established between these artists and those of the region such as Aristide Maillol, Etienne Terrus, Louis Bausil, Camille Descossy… From its modern period to its contemporary period the collection of the Céret museum is deeply marked by the sentimental link that artists and donors (they are often the same) maintain with the city and the surrounding landscapes. Contemporary art collections Céret, baptized by André Salmon "Mecca of Cubism" after the passage of Picasso and Braque, has acquired its fame. Dali himself came to make his mark there on a crazy day in August 1965. In direct contact with the movements of the 1960s and 1970s, the museum welcomed other artists: Claude Viallat, the art critic Jacques Lepage and Claude Massé , launched Impact I. In 1966 the happenings followed one another in the streets of the city and the protest creations of the new generation were exhibited: Arman, Ben, Buren, Vincent Bioulès, Joël Kermarrec, Pierre Buraglio, Niele Toroni, Michel Parmentier… For for the first time in the South of France, artists from Catalonia, the Nice region and Paris brought together artists whose works would later mark some of the great movements of contemporary art such as BMPT or Supports-Surfaces. In 1972 Impact II also brought together Louis Chacallis, Max Charvolen, Christian Jaccard, Noël Dolla, Joël Desbouiges, Fisher, Annette Messager, Patrick Jude… The contemporary collection reflects these events but also endeavors to represent current artistic creation. It is supported by important deposits from private collectors including that, in 1989, of the art critic Pierre Restany, cornerstone of New Realism. Those of Yves Michaud (professor of philosophy and former director of the National School of Fine Arts) and Jean-Pierre Alis (founder of the Galerie Athanor in Marseille) will follow at the end of the 90s.
